Arthritis awareness is observed in the month of May. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting one in five Americans. The goal of Arthritis Awareness Month is to educate and increase awareness about the causes, prevention, and treatment of this debilitating disease.1 Promoting a healthier lifestyle through walking and exercise is the primary focus of the Arthritis Foundation during this month.2

- The Arthritis Walk, which is nationwide, promotes awareness and raises funds for research.3
- Recommended exercise is low-impact activities of approximately 150 minutes per week.1
- There are over 100 different arthritis types which affect the joints, causing pain and stiffness.4
