Research Notes on Mastectomy and Seroma


A seroma is a pocket of clear serous fluid that sometimes develops in the body after surgery. When small blood vessels are ruptured, blood plasma can seep out; inflammation caused by dying injured cells also contributes to the fluid. Seroma is thought to be caused by the fact that the Mastectomy operation leaves a lot of "empty space" under the skin where the breast tissue used to be. Removal of fluid with a needle and syringe if marked bulging, in most cases the fluid will be reabsorbed by the body over time.
