Research Notes on Marshmallow
Marshmallow (also known as marsh mallow, Althaea officinalis, althea, or white mallow root) has been used for centuries to help treat various types of illnesses.1 Marshmallow acts in a way that moistens the respiratory system making it very useful in treating dry coughs, bronchitis, asthma, and many other respiratory disorders.2 Marshmallow also acts as a diuretic and has the ability to reduce inflammation and infection.2
Fast Facts:
- Other conditions treated with marshmallow include: bladder infection, colitis, diverticulitis, duodenal ulcer, dysuria, gastroenteritis, heartburn, sore throat, laryngitis, and abdominal discomforts.3
- There are no reported side effects associated with marshmallow, and it is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.1
- In addition to being useful as a herbal remedy, the marshmallow herb is nutritious. It is high in aluminum, chromium, fiber, iron, magnesium, selenium, sodium, tin, and vitamin C.2
