Research Notes on Malathion

Malathion, sold under the brand name Ovide, is an organophosphate agent which acts as a pediculicide.1 It inhibits cholinesterase activity, which is essential for growth and survival by disrupting the metabolic process in the parasite (lice). 2 Malathion is widely used as a pesticide in agriculture - used in low doses for treatment of scabies, bed bugs, head and body lice. 3

Fast Facts:

  • Highly flammable: keep away from heat 4
  • Effective: pediculicidal (live lice) and partially ovicidal (lice eggs) 5
  • For topical use only, leave on 8-12 hours, let dry naturally.1
  • Do not use on infants or children under the age of six without seeking physician advice.4
  • FDA Pregnancy Category B.4
  • Most common side effects: irritation of the skin and scalp.6
  • Second treatment may be necessary if lice are still present after 7-9 days of first treatment.6
