Bipolar disorder, also called manic depression, is a mood disorder in which a person has manic episodes followed by a severe depression. Those with bipolar disorder may also have mixed episodes when both mania and depression are present at the same time.1 In major depressive disorder, also known as clinical depression, the person is in a low mood all the time. Those with major depressive disorder have low self-esteem and loss of interest in enjoyable activities.2
