Research Notes on Major Depressive Disorder and Medication
Research suggests that most patients with major depressive disorder respond to antidepressant drug therapy.1 SSRI antidepressants are usually prescribed first as they have a low incidence of side effects and low overdose potential.1 Examples of SSRI antidepressants include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), fluvoxamine (Luvox), and sertraline (Zoloft).1 SNRI antidepressants such as venlafaxine (Effexor) are prescribed if SSRI antidepressant therapy is unsuccessful.1
Fast Facts:
- Other classifications of antidepressants include tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.2
- The FDA has warned that some antidepressants can increase suicidal risk in children and adolescents.2
- Antipsychotic medications, lithium, and thyroid medications are used to supplement antidepressants when warranted.2
