Research Notes on Major Depressive Disorder Treatment
Current research supports treatment approaches that address both the biological and psychological underpinnings of major depressive disorder.1 Both psychotherapy and medication are essential to effectively treat the disorder.1 While cognitive-behavioral therapy is often the psychotherapy of choice, other modalities such as rational emotive therapy or psychodynamic approaches are utilized as well.1 Patience is key in effectively treating the disorder.1
Fast Facts:
- The cytochrome P450 blood test can determine genetic factors that influence an individual's response to a particular antidepressant medication.2
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are commonly prescribed as an initial medication of choice.2
- Electric shock treatment (ECT) is used to treat severe major depressive disorder symptoms, particularly when medications fail to relieve symptoms.3
