Major depressive disorder is a mental disorder where five or more symptoms of depression are present for two weeks or more. Sleeping patterns and eating habits are commonly affected. Major depression can also increase a person's suicide risk.1 A support group provides members a place to speak with others who are experiencing similar personal situations; they can provide sympathetic understanding and receive unbiased information on treatments and medications.2
