Research Notes on Major Depression and Multiple Sclerosis

About one half of all people with multiple sclerosis (MS) suffer from major depression at some point in the disease. This may be partly due to the fact that multiple sclerosis sometimes destroys the myelin surrounding the nerves, which can greatly impact mood. Depression is also a side effect of some drugs that are used to treat multiple sclerosis. A combination of antidepressants and psychotherapy is the best method of treatment for depression in multiple sclerosis.1

Fast Facts:

  • Studies show that the risk of suicide is over 7% higher in people with MS than the general population.2
  • Depression and MS share many of the same symptoms and sometimes aggravate one another.3
  • Early on, MS is often misdiagnosed for depression because they share many of the same symptoms.3
