Research Notes on Major Depression and Miscarriage
Miscarriages can make some women prone to major depression, according to some researchers. A study by New York State Psychiatric Institute found that 11 percent of women who had miscarried had an episode of major depression within the first six months after the miscarriage. Major depression was five times higher among women who had no children, compared to the control group.1
Fast Facts:
- While it is normal to feel bad after a miscarriage, these feelings of sadness and loss may become severe enough to be a cause for concern.2
- If you feel you need a counselor, it is wise to see one.2
- Symptoms of depression are sadness and emptiness, hopelessness, loss of interest in once enjoyed activities, difficulty concentrating, and changes in appetite.2
- If the depression has been ongoing for several months, a health care provider may be able to help you.2
