Research Notes on Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder is a mental disorder that is characterized by the presence of five or more signs of depression for two weeks or longer.1 The exact cause of the depression may be unknown, but some researchers believe it can be attributed to a chemical imbalance in the brain.1 A diagnosis may be made by a general practitioner or a psychiatrist.2 Treatment is often done on an outpatient basis, but if there is the potential of harm to the person or others, inpatient care is considered.3
Fast Facts:
- Also known as unipolar depression, clinical depression, and major depression.1
