Research Notes on Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are a type of antidepressant used to treat mental depression. MAOIs are useful in treating patients whose depression is combined with other disorders such as, phobias, anxiety and panic attacks.1 MAOIs work by correcting chemical imbalances in the brain.1

  • MAOIs are not recommended for children, teens, or women that are nursing or pregnant2
  • You must avoid eating certain foods while on MAOIs2
  • MAOIs were discovered in the 1950's and were one of the first anti-depressants discovered3
