Research Notes on Lymph Nodes
A lymph node is part of the lymphatic system and has many types of cells. Lymph nodes are found throughout the body and acts as filters and traps for foreign particles. Lymph nodes are important in the functioning of the immune system and may become inflamed in various conditions from common infections to more severe conditions such as cancers.1
Fast Facts:
- Lymph nodes may be biopsied when they become inflamed for diagnosis.1
- The lymph nodes contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) which help destroy foreign bacteria or other harmful cells.2
- There are several groups of lymph nodes. The ones most frequently enlarged or swollen are in the neck, under the chin, in the armpits, and in the groin.3
