Research Notes on Lycopene
Lycopene, found primarily in tomatoes, is an antioxidant in the carotenoid family. Lycopene gives tomatoes and certain other fruits and vegetables their rich, vibrant color. People who have diets rich in tomatoes might have a lower risk of certain types of cancer, however more research is needed to confirm lycopene's role in cancer prevention.
Fast Facts:
- One of the most potent antioxidants in the diet
- Present in watermelons, pink grapefruits, apricots and pink guavas
- Processed tomato products like ketchup, paste and sauce are good sources
