Research Notes on Lung Transplant
A lung transplant is a surgical procedure performed to replace old diseased lungs with new ones from donors who have been declared brain-dead. The lung transplant is usually the last resort for treatment when all other methods have failed. Some examples of diseases treated by a lung transplant include emphysema, cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and COPD. Current survival rates are as high as 80% at one year following transplantation and 60% at four years.
