Research Notes on Lung Diffusion Testing


The lung diffusion test measures how well oxygen passes from the air sacs of the lung into blood.1 The test can diagnose certain lung diseases. Abnormal test results may be indicative of a lung disease such as sarcoidosis, emphysema, or asbestosis.1

  • Also known as diffusion capacity and DLCO test.1
  • Patients should refrain from smoking at least 4-6 hours prior to testing.
