Research Notes on Low Platelet Count and Pregnancy

Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the platelet count is below 150,000 platelets per microliter (ppm) of blood. Normally, a platelet count is between 150,000 ppm and 400,000 ppm.1 Platelet counts in women with uncomplicated pregnancies often drop about 10%, and generally does not result in thrombocytopenia. However, if a woman is already at the lower end of normal and her platelets drop 10%, this would be considered thrombocytopenic.2

Fast Facts:

  • Thrombocytopenia occurs in about 7% to 10% of all pregnancies.2
  • A pregnant women who has no history of thrombocytopenia would be diagnosed with gestational thrombocytopenia.2
  • Gestational thrombocytopenia occurs in about 5% to 8% of healthy women.2
