Research Notes on Low Birth Weight
Low birth weight is described as infants weighing under 2,500 grams (or approximately 5lbs 8oz) at birth.1 Infants who weigh less than this are typically at risk for more problems during and after delivery.1 Approximately one out of every 12 babies born in the U.S. suffers from low birth weight.1 Premature birth and intrauterine growth restriction are two common reasons for a newborn to be classified as a low birth weight baby.1
Fast Facts:
- While infants who suffer from physical abnormalities or chromosomal abnormalities are often presented with low birth weight, an infant born to a mother who is small in stature and build may also be classified as low birth weight with no abnormalities.2
- First time pregnancies and pregnant women under the age of 17 or over the age of 35 commonly result in lower birth weight infants.2
- Proper prenatal care and nutrition throughout your pregnancy may significantly reduce the risk of low birth weight in your baby.2
