Research Notes on Lou Gehrig's Disease Breakthrough with Stem Cells
Scientists from Columbia and Harvard universities revealed that they have created the first stem cell lines from skin cells. These stem cells have been converted into motor neurons, which are cells that degenerate in sufferers of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). The stem cells created came from patches of skin from the arms of two sisters in their 80's that share a rare genetic mutation that causes about 2% of ALS cases.
