Research Notes on Long-Acting Olanzapine Injectable

Olanzapine injection is used for treating agitation that occurs with bipolar mania.1 It is an atypical antipsychotic. It is not known how it exactly works, however it is thought to affect certain substances in the brain.2 Side effects including dizziness, confusion, altered speech, or coma, occurring within 1 to 3 hours of injection have prompted the FDA to find the long-acting olanzapine injectable "not-approvable" for treatment of schizophrenia.3

Fast Facts:

  • The FDA noted that these symptoms appear to be unique for this formulation of olanzapine.4
  • All patients who experienced these symptoms recovered.5
  • Other side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, pain, weakness, and redness or swelling at the injection site.6
