Research Notes on Living with a Husband Who Is Depressed
It is not easy to live with a husband who is depressed. Often, a spouse does not want to admit that they are depressed. Symptoms of depression can manifest themselves as fatigue, backache, digestive problems, or other physical symptoms. Some spouses act depressed, however deny that anything is wrong. Denial or refusal to seek help is not a healthy option. Normally, the non-depressed partner wants to do anything they can to help.1
Fast Facts:
- You can help your depressed husband by taking his complaints seriously.2
- Encourage him to seek help.2
- Understanding the type of depression (such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder, or seasonal affective disorder) is crucial to helping your spouse avoid a further and more depressive state.2
- You can take an OrganizedWisdom quiz to help determine if your depression is severe enough to warrant seeking professional help.
