Research Notes on Lipoproteins
Lipoproteins are tiny particles that circulate in the blood that contain cholesterol, fat, and proteins.1 These are the particles that can build up in a person's arteries and cause heart attack.2 Abnormalities of the amounts or kinds of lipoproteins in blood can cause increased risk of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries; leading to heart attack, angina or coronary pain, or sudden death. It can also lead to atherosclerosis in many other arteries in the body leading to stroke, aneurysm, or gangrene.1
Fast Facts:
- Abnormal levels can be reduced by eating a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and regular exercise.1
- Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) - carry (newly synthesised) triacylglycerol from the liver to adipose tissue..3
- Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) - carry cholesterol from the liver to cells of the body. Sometimes referred to as the "bad cholesterol" lipoprotein..3
- High-density lipoproteins (HDL) - collects cholesterol from the body's tissues, and brings it back to the liver. Sometimes referred to as the "good cholesterol" lipoprotein.3
