Phototherapy is sometimes used in treating bipolar disorder. It is still a relatively new treatment approach.1 Phototherapy involves the use of lights to treat a disorder.2

- Phototherapy can be an effective treatment for depressive episodes of bipolar disorder.3
- Studies have shown this therapy is most effecting for bipolar during mid-day, as morning treatment can result in mixed episodes.3
- Side effects of light therapy can include eye strain, headaches, and insomnia.2
