Research Notes on Light Therapy Boxes
Light therapy (or phototherapy) consists of exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light using lasers, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light, for a prescribed amount of time. It has been proven to be effective in treating acne vulgaris, seasonal affective disorder, delayed sleep phase syndrome, and non-seasonal depression. A light therapy box is a small, portable device that contains fluorescent bulbs or tubes and is used mainly in the treatment of seasonal affective disorder.

- Developed in the late 1980s.
- Light therapy may be most effective when you use it first thing in the morning when you wake up.
- Reduces inflammation and slows the production of skin cells in psoriasis.1
- Response to this therapy usually occurs within 2 to 4 days, but it may take up to 3 weeks of light therapy before symptoms are relieved.
- -- The most common side effects of light therapy include eyestrain or visual disturbances, headaches, agitation or feeling "wired", nausea, and sweating.
