Research Notes on Life Expectancy in Russia


Russia's life expectancy is the lowest it has been since the 1960s.1 In Russia the average male lives only 59 years, while the average woman lives 70 years. Bad health care, smoking, unemployment, health problems and the largest factor alcoholism all play a part in the men's short life expectancy rate.2 Living standards are expected to continue falling due to poor economic and industrial problems.1

Fast Facts:

  • At least 34,000 villages in Russia have less than 10 people. Sometimes elderly women are the only people left in a village, due to the men dying before them..2
  • Men in Russia on average drink one bottle of vodka each day.2
  • Alcoholism seems to affect men both in the cities and the rural villages.2
  • 1/4 of all Russians live below the poverty line, making only $35.36 U.S.1
