Research Notes on Leukemia Screening

There is no set screening test as yet for leukemia in children or adults. For the most part, doctors learn that a patient may have leukemia during routine blood tests such as those for employment, military service, pregnancy, or before surgery. The best strategy for early detection in children is prompt attention to the signs and symptoms of this disease. In order to diagnose leukemia, the physician will do a full physical exam, feeling especially for swelling of the liver and spleen, and enlarged lymph nodes. The doctor may also ask about a patient's family medical history of leukemia.
