Leukemia

Research Notes on Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow. There are four main types: acute lymphocytic, acute myelogenous, chronic lymphocytic and chronic myelogenous. The treatments and progress of the disease depend on which type of leukemia is involved.

Fast Facts:

  • Lymphocytic or lymphoblastic indicates that the leukemia involves a type of marrow cell that forms lymphocytes
  • Myelogenous or myeloid indicates that the leukemia involves a type of marrow cell that normally goes on to form red or white blood cells or platelets
  • Acute leukemias progress rapidly if not treated
  • Chronic leukemias progress more slowly
  • Childhood leukemia is usually an acute variety
  • There are several rare leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia
  • Survival rates in leukemia have risen dramatically in the last 40 years
