Research Notes on Lethargy
Lethargy is a state of generalized fatigue or sluggishness.1 Someone who is lethargic may also have an impairment of consciousness resulting in reduced alertness and awareness.2 It is normal to have a lack of energy and feel tired at times. Lethargy that lasts more than a day or two may be a sign of a more serious problem.3
Fast Facts:
- The most common cause of lethargy is depression.3
- Ongoing lethargy can be a caused by illness, many different physical and psychological reasons or as a side effect of certain medications.4
- Treatment depends on the cause of the lethargy.5
