Research Notes on Leon Festinger
Leon Festinger, born May 8, 1919, in New York City, was a social psychologist who developed the theory of cognitive dissonance. Also attributed to Festinger is social comparison theory and the role of propinquity in the formation of social ties. He is best known for his 1957 publication, A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, where two contradictory ideas cause an uncomfortable feeling at the same time.1
Fast Facts:
- Leon Festinger also co-wrote the book When Prophecy Fails in 1956.2
- Festinger resigned from social psychology in 1964 after being admitted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and earning the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 1959.3
- Festinger passed away February 11, 1989 at the age of 69.4
