Research Notes on Lassa Fever
Lassa fever is an acute viral illness, which is carried by rodents. It occurs only in West Africa (e.g., Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and regions of Nigeria). The normal duration for Lassa Fever is one to four weeks. Outcomes from this disease can vary widely; from infection with no apparent symptoms, to death. The anti-viral drug ribavirin is an effective treatment as long as it is given within the first six days of infection. Currently, there is no vaccine available to prevent Lassa Fever.
