Research Notes on Lamotrigine and Pregnancy


Lamotrigine has been classified as a category C medication by the U.S. FDA, indicating that the medication should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. There is little information available regarding the use of lamotrigine during human pregnancy, but animal studies have revealed an increased risk of birth defects such as cleft palate.1 Patients who become pregnant should notify their physician as soon as possible if they are currently undergoing lamotrigine treatment.
