Research Notes on Lamictal and Pregnancy
Lamictal (lamotrigine) should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled Lamictal as a category C drug, meaning the effects of the medication have not been completely studied in pregnant women. If used during the first trimester there is a possible risk of cardiovascular defects, neural tube defects, pulmonary defects, craniofacial defects, and limb or bone defects.1
Fast Facts:
- Lamictal may also increase the risk for miscarriages, still births, intrauterine growth retardation, and delayed bone growth.1
- Respiratory depression, septicemia, and abnormal twisting of the small intestine were also reported in newborns exposed to Lamictal while in-utero.1
- Consult with you physician before breastfeeding, as Lamictal is excreted into breast milk.1
- Lamictal is an anti-epileptic medication used to treat seizures in both children and adults.2
