Research Notes on Lack of Sleep and Cognitive Function
Lack of sleep can have a noticeable detrimental effect on cognitive functioning. According to sleep researcher William Dement, adults should feel alert after waking up in the morning. Cognitive symptoms of lack of sleep include difficulty paying attention, lack of alertness, fatigue, lack of energy, and poor reaction time.1
Fast Facts:
- Lack of sleep makes high cognitive functions, such as problem solving, more difficult.2
- The amount of working memory, or the ability to keep information active and accessible, decreases with lack of sleep.2
- The body's 24 hour cycles of sleep and wake is called the circadian rhythm.2
- New born children may require as much as 18 hours of sleep per day, teenagers around 9-10 hours, and adults need about 7-8 hours of sleep per day.2
