Research Notes on La Crosse Encephalitis


La Crosse (LAC) encephalitis is a mosquihto-borne virus caused by an infected tree-hole mosquito. The mosquitos become infected by biting an infected squirrel, or chipmunk. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and lethargy. In children under 16; severe disease can occur producing seizures, paralysis and coma. Death is rare; occuring in less than 1% of cases. You cannot get La Crosse encephalitis from squirrels or chipmunks. The virus has been found in some parts of Virginia and several Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic states.
