Research Notes on LDL Cholesterol Test
LDL cholesterol is commonly known as the "bad" cholesterol in the blood. Testing the amount of LDL is commonly done through the use of a lipid profile test, but can also be performed alone.1 It is used to predict the risk of heart disease and may be monitored over a period of time.1 The test is performed through a simple blood draw and there is relatively little risk involved.
Fast Facts:
- The optimal amount of LDL is less than 100mg/dL if there are no risk factors for heart disease.1
- You may be asked not to eat or drink anything for 9-12 hours before the test, and certain medications may also be withheld until after the test due to their interference with test results.2
- Stress, illness, and pregnancy may result in inaccurate results, so wait at least six weeks after these events to have LDL levels measured.1
