Research Notes on Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are solid stone-like concentrations of minerals and organic substances that form within the kidneys and urinary tract.1 This condition is also called renal stone disease or nephrolithiasis.2 A kidney stone can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a pearl.3 Kidney stones generally do not cause pain until they pass out of the kidney, at which point they can become lodged in the urinary tract.2
Fast Facts:
- The pain from passing a kidney stone can be excruciating.4
- Usually the only medical treatment needed is pain medication.4
- There is no medical consensus as to why kidney stones form, although genetics, environment, diet, and diuretics may all play a role.5
- Approximately 10 percent of people will experience a kidney stone during their lifetime.2
