Research Notes on Kidney Stone Treatment
About 90% of stones 4 mm or less in size usually will pass spontaneously, however 99% of stones greater than 6 mm will require some form of intervention. There are various measures that can be used to encourage the passage of a stone. These can include increased hydration, medication for treating infection and reducing pain, and diuretics to encourage urine flow and prevent further stone formation. ...read more at Wikipedia
Fast Facts:
- Conservative treatment for small stones is best with increased fluids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen. Mild narcotics, such as hydrocodone or Tylenol no. 3 may be helpful for pain that is not controlled by ibuprofen. Tamsulosin may help speed the passage of the stone in some cases.1
- One and three weeks is the average time to pass a kidney stone. 2
- Two-thirds pass on their own within four weeks. 2
- Do not drink grapefruit juice; drink two glasses of water every two hours. 2
- Other medications may include: allopurinol, antibiotics, diuretics, phosphate solutions, sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate. 3
- Kidney stones greater than nine to ten millimeters require advanced treatment. 1
- Advanced treatment: shock wave lithotripsy (SWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) or ureteroscopy. 1
