Research Notes on Kidney Scan
A kidney scan is a nuclear scanning test that is done to evaluate kidney function. A kidney scan works by injecting a radioactive tracer into the veins usually through the arms. The tracer then flows through the body and into the kidneys, where a gamma camera takes pictures of the kidneys. Areas of the kidneys where the tracer shows up in higher-than-normal amounts result in bright spots and areas where the tracer does not show up appear as dark spots in the picture. Doctors can use these pictures to check the blood flow through the kidneys, see how a transplanted kidney is working, evaluate the extent of kidney damage caused by an injury, detect an obstruction in the kidney or kidney stones, and detect growths in the kidneys.1
Fast Facts:
- Kidney scans show cell activity and function in the kidneys.1
- Dark spots can indicate problems with blood vessels, cysts, some cancers, or abscesses.1
- Bright spots can indicate some types of cancer.1
- There are two types of kidney scans called the perfusion study and the function study.1
- The two types of kidney scans are often done at the same time.1
- A Kidney Scan is also called a Renogram or Renal scan.2
