Research Notes on Kegel Exercises for Overactive Bladder
Kegel exercises are one of the most effective natural treatments for overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.1 Kegels work by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles which help to hold urine in the bladder.2 Although a very effective treatment, it can take up to six to twelve weeks to work.1
Fast Facts:
- Kegels should be performed between 30-80 times daily for best results.3
- Biofeedback and pelvic-floor electrical stimulation are sometimes used in conjunction with Kegel exercises.3
- Medications and behavioral therapies are also available if Kegel exercises are unable to control the symptoms of overactive bladder.3
