Research Notes on Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki disease is a poorly understood form of vasculitis that affects many organs, including the skin and mucous membranes, lymph nodes, blood vessel walls, and the heart. It most commonly affects children of Japanese and Korean descent, and can be fatal, although many children make a full recovery. Kawasaki disease is the number one cause of acquired heart disease in children.1
Fast Facts:
- The cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown, but it does not appear to be genetic.2
- Most children with Kawasaki disease are less than two years old, and 80% of affected children are under five years of age.3
- The initial symptoms include a persistent high fever, large swollen lymph nodes in the neck, extremely red eyes, rash, and sore throat.4
