Research Notes on Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), formerly known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), is the most common form of persistent arthritis in children. Arthritis is the inflammation of the synovium (the lining tissues) of a joint. JIA is a subset of arthritis seen in childhood, which may be transient and self-limited or chronic. ...read more from Wikipedia

- Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis appears between the ages of 6 months and 16 years.
- The three main types are polyarticular arthritis, pauciarticular JRA, and systemic JRA.
- Symptoms may include joint stiffness, slow rate of growth, swollen painful joints, and back pain.
- Treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, and physical therapy.
- The prognosis is good. Approximately 75% of JRA patients eventually enter remission.
