Research Notes on Juniper
Juniper berries are known as the primary flavoring in gin.1 In the past, herbalists used juniper to treat conditions such as congestive heart failure, gonorrhea and to assist in childbirth.2 Today it is mostly used to treat urinary tract infections.2 Chewing the berries may be useful in treating inflamed and infected gums.3
Fast Facts:
- Used by Native Americans as a female contraceptive.1
- Has been shown (in limited studies) to inhibit the herpes virus.2
- Should not be used by pregnant women or those with kidney disorders.3
