Research Notes on Januvia Linked to Pancreatitis
The FDA released findings that eighty-eight cases of pancreatitis were reported after Januvia was approved and released to the market in 2006.1 Januvia, a brand name for sitagliptin, is prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Merck argues the fact that diabetic patients are predisposed to developing pancreatitis without medication.2
Fast Facts:
- Januvia and Janumet (both manufactured by Merck) sales totaled more than $1 billion in the first six months of 2009.3
- Out of the 88 patients who reported problems, 19 incurred problems within the first 30 days of administration and 47 cases resolved after discontinuation of Januvia.2
- The FDA is collaborating with Merck to add information to the drug label and advising health care professionals to monitor Januvia patients closely.2
