Iron deficiency is a condition that results from not enough iron in the body.1 In the United States, it is the most common nutritional deficiency and the leading cause of anemia.1

  • The terms iron deficiency, anemia and iron deficiency anemia are very often used interchangeably, but are the same.1
  • Iron deficiency anemia can typically be treated with iron supplements.2
  • Low iron levels are the result of three things:3
    • -Blood loss
    • -Not consuming enough iron through diet
    • -Inability to absorb the iron in the diet
