Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Research Notes on Intraventricular Hemorrhage

The brain has small, fragile blood vessels. In a premature baby these vessels are even more fragile due to being underdeveloped. Intraventricular hemorrhage is when any of these blood vessels rupture. Bleeding may be slight and self resolving with little to no long term effects. If the bleeding is heavier inside the ventricles it can cause pressure and possibly block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. This can lead to hydrocephalus. The more severe an intraventricular hemorrhage is the more likely there can be long term effects.1

Fast Facts:

  • Also referred to as an IVH.2
  • There are 4 grades of IVH, with 3 and 4 being the more severe.1
  • Though uncommon, IVH may develop in a full term baby.1
