Research Notes on Intravenous Therapy
Intravenous therapy or IV therapy is the giving of liquid substances directly into a vein. It can be intermittent or continuous; continuous administration is called an intravenous drip. The word intravenous simply means "within a vein", but is most commonly used to refer to IV therapy. - Some reasons for giving IV therapy are to put fluid in the body which may not be given orally or medicines that need to work quickly and to give blood or blood products.1
- IV lines may be placed peripherally or centrally.2
- Intravenous therapy is not with risks. They include infection, phlebitis and embolism and should only be performed by trained personnel, using proper equipment.3
