Intravenous Pyelogram

This WisdomCard managed by: Kricel Abreu

An intravenous pyelogram is an x-ray examination which uses a contrast material to diagnose conditions involving the kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder. The test is relatively painless with only one injection into the arm containing contrast material. The contrast makes the organs appear bright white on an x-ray screen allowing the radiologist to assess the anatomy and function of the lower urinary tract.1

Fast Facts:

  • -- If the test is performed in a non-emergency basis, a patient may need to cleanse the bowel of stool via use of laxatives or enema.2
  • -- The test is helpful in the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, polycystic kidneys, kidney stones, obstructions and anatomical abnormalities.3
  • -- If breastfeeding, a woman needs to either plan ahead and pump enough breastmilk for two days of feedings or plan to use formula for at least two days after the test.4
