Research Notes on Ischemic Bowel Disease
Ischemic bowel disease is an illness characterized by a lack of blood flow to the intestines.1 It is generally caused by a blockage of an artery that supplies blood to the intestines, a narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), or an obstruction in the colon.2 Common symptoms include: abdominal pain, bloody stool, a frequent urge to defecate, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and possible abdominal distension.2 Possible treatment options can include surgery, antibiotics, or intravenous fluids depending on the severity of the disease.2

- This condition often occurs in the colon, resulting in ischemic colitis.3
- This condition is rarely seen in those under 50 years of age.4
- Ischemic bowel disease can be fatal, so it is of utmost importance that you see your physician if you feel you have the symptoms of this disease.2
