Research Notes on Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease refers to a group of lung diseases characterized by fibrosis or scaring of the tissue, which causes inflammation of the lungs and makes it difficult for a person to breath. Some of the symptoms are shortness of breath, particularly with exertion, chronic dry hacking cough, fatigue and weakness, discomfort in the chest, loss of appetite and Rapid weight loss. Interstitial lung disease is not a single disease but a group of different lung diseases, so the treatment is different for each disease.

Fast Facts:

  • In all cases, lung scarring, once it occurs, is generally irreversible
  • Some symptoms are a dry cough and a feeling of breathlessness (dyspnea), especially during or after physical activities
  • Interstitial lung disease caused by toxins or drugs can sometimes be reversed when you're no longer exposed to those substances
  • Treatments for interstitial lung disease include, corticosteroid drugs, cytotoxic drugs, anti-fibrotics, antioxidants, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lung transplantation
