Research Notes on Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis (IC) causes recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and the surrounding pelvic region.1 IC is also known as painful bladder syndrome (PBS), bladder pain syndrome (BPS), and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS).2 The cause of interstitial cystitis is unknown; however, it is not caused by bacterial or viral infections.3 The most common symptoms are an urgent need to urinate, a frequent need to urinate, or both.1
Fast Facts:
- IC is most common in women.2
- IC is often confused with a urinary tract infection based on symptoms.4
- IC in men may be mistaken for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.2
- Women may also experience pain during intercourse.3
